Well, I got another event on the horizon! And this one, both its timing and theme, shouldn’t surprise anyone who knows me.
I attended the Columbus Witches Ball in November 2022, and had an amazing time. Hosted by the Magical Druid, one of the most prominent metaphysical shops in Columbus (we have a few), it’s an awesome gathering of witches, Wiccans, and neo-Pagans. There was a ritual (which I filmed for YouTube), some dancing, and, of course, plenty of people interested in books and Tarot readings. I did very well on sales, and also had a ton of fun.
I wanted to go back in 2023, but I had a conflict, and last year, I attended a different event held by the Magical Druid, so I decided not to go. But this year, I’m going back. And this year, it’ll be held at the Ohio Brewing Company at 421 East 2nd Avenue in downtown Columbus from 1 PM – 11 PM. Obviously, there will be food and drink (it is a brewery, after all), but also a guest lecturer, a ritual, and dancing. Plus, lots of vendors, including little old me. I’ll be there selling books and doing Tarot card readings, so if you’re in the area, please consider attending. I’ll include links to tickets below.
And don’t worry. I’ll be sure to post a reminder before the event. Just in case you forget. And I’ll let you all know if any new events pop up. Which, given Halloween is 94 days away, is likely to happen.

It’s the night before the Big Ohio Book Con, and earlier today, I went and set up my table. This is what it looks like.
I hope it looks great. I think it looks great, even if my stickers and bookmarks and whatnot aren’t out yet (I’ll do that in the morning). But one thing’s for certain: it’s cramped, about five feet total. And I have to make do with what space I have.
This lack of space, and trying to make a good booth for myself, made me appreciate all over again what goes into making an eye-catching booth. I thought I’d figured that out after my first ParaPsyCon, and a friend advised me to get at least some kind of sign for next year so people knew what I do at my table. Solid advice, and it made me realize that I need to be a lot more eye-catching if I want people to come check out my table. This has led to various changes to my booths over the year, including that big banner you see behind the table, which I got in December 2023.
But this tiny space, and the other booths around me, made me realize that all over again. My neighbors are romance authors, and they have such eye-catching booths, with banners and signs and little decorations like fake vines or flowers or game wheels or whatever. And just about every table I saw today was just as decorative and eye-catching. Made me think to myself, “Shit, I gotta be careful if I want to stand out, too!”
And that’s something I got to keep in mind from now on: I just can’t just have a simple template for my tables. I have to adjust based on space, the kind of con I’m at, and who I’m next to or near. That way, readers will be interested in coming closer and reading my work.
Sucks that I have to basically turn my table into a peacock just to get people interested in reading my work. However, I’ve long accepted that I need to be something of a carnival barker to get people to come over and find what I hope will be their new favorite book. So, adjusting my display as needed shouldn’t be too much more work.
Anyway, we’ll see how it goes. Tomorrow’s the con, and I’ll be there for most of the weekend. There will hopefully be plenty of opportunities for me to meet new readers, and to change my display as necessary. Should be interesting.

It’s that time again. No, not the time to promote my work or to make bizarre faces. One of those will come later. No, it’s time to talk about the events I’ll be doing in the near future! As you know, I try to go to as many events as possible. It’s a great way to meet new readers, and once or twice, I even get a few readers who come with the hope of meeting me in-person. So, I occasionally post updates on which events I’ll be at, in case any of my Followers of Fear want to stop by and see me.
So, without further ado, let’s get talking about the events I’ll be attending over the next few months.
First, I’ll be at the Halfway to Halloween Expo at the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds in Ann Arbor, MI on Saturday, May 10, 2025. This is a huge gathering of horror fans, with food trucks, a hearse show, plenty of vendors, and even a haunted house attraction you can go through! I’ll be there selling books (including my new book, Symphony for Walpurgis) and doing Tarot readings, and you can buy tickets on the day of, so if you can stop by, please do. I would love to see you.
Fast forward to June, and I’ll be heading to Stamford, CT for StokerCon from June 12-15! If you’re unfamiliar, StokerCon is the premier convention for horror writers, hosted by the Horror Writers Association, and I’m going there this year to see all my horror-writing and horror-loving friends. And if all goes well, I’ll also be sitting on some panels and maybe even pitching The Shape of Evil to editors and agents. And if you want to come and hang out, I would love to see you.
A couple of weekends later, I’ll be at the Big Ohio Book Con in Medina, OH on June 28-29. It’s a relatively new con sponsored by Black Cat Books & Oddities, but from what I hear, they had a big turnout their first year, and it looks to grow, so I’m looking forward to selling books and doing Tarot readings there. If you’re interested, please stop by. Obviously, I would love to see you.
And last, but definitely not least, HWA Ohio will be having a booth at the Columbus Book Festival in downtown Columbus, OH on July 12-13! This is a humongous book festival, with over 40,000 guests streaming through the downtown library and Topiary Park last year. And with hundreds of authors, booths for nearly every imaginable interest, performances, food trucks, and so much more, you wouldn’t want to miss out on it this year. Plus, me and my fellow Ohio horror writers are holding a booth together, so you’re bound to find something there if you visit. So, why not stop by? All of us would love to see you.

Wow. It’s been a kind of crazy this year, hasn’t it? If I’m not careful, 2025 is going to leave me exhausted! Wait, what do you mean we’re not even ten days into January? Oh God, somebody get me off this ride!
Alright, enough kidding around. Besides, I’m not doing too bad so far. I actually feel really good about what I’ve gotten done today, and coming back to work after vacation hasn’t been as bad as it could have been. I just wish I had more time to devote to writing like I did on that vacation!
Well, maybe through meeting readers and other writers at events, I’ll eventually get to that point. And with that rather silly segue, let’s talk about the events I’ll be attending and/or vending at in 2024, because I’ve got a new one I’m going to be in!
First, in a little over three weeks, I’ll be at Akronomicon on Saturday, February 1st at the Emidio and Sons Banquet Center in Akron, Ohio. Formerly known as Monster Mania, this is from what I hear a small but passionate horror con, and I’m looking forward to it. If you can, please stop by. I’ll be signing books and doing Tarot readings and would love to see you. You can grab tickets through the event’s Facebook page.
Then, I’ll be at the Akron Book Festival at the Main Library in downtown Akron on March 8th. It’s being sponsored by their library, and it sounds like it’s going to be quite popular, like the Columbus Book Fest (but hopefully not as hot and humid). And last but not least, I’ve just been confirmed for the Big Ohio Book Con in Medina, Ohio on June 28th-29th. This con is hosted by Black Cat Books & Oddities, a bookstore that’s been talked about quite a bit in local horror circles for its leanings towards the dark and spooky. It probably won’t surprise you that I’m already scheduled to attend some events as an author in the coming year. And because I love it when I run into Followers of Fear at these events (doesn’t happen often, but it still happens occasionally), I try to advertise the hell out of them in the hopes that someone reading these posts will be in the area and want to come and see me.
Plus, I’m doing a lot of new events this coming year, of which most of them are horror cons, so that should be a lot of fun. So, without further ado, let’s talk about what’s happening in 2025!
First, I’ll be getting started early this year with Akronomicon. This horror themed convention, previously known as Monsterfest Mania, will be held at the Emidio Expo Center in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, which is located in the Akron metropolitan area (hence the name Akronomicon). It’ll be held February 1st, from 10 AM – 7 PM. I’ll be there selling books and doing Tarot readings. If you can stop by, please do. Tickets are being sold here.
Then, I’ll be back in Akron at the Akron Book Festival on March 8th from 11 AM – 3 PM at the Main Library in downtown Akron. I’ll be there with a bunch of local Ohio authors, selling books (and hopefully being allowed to do Tarot readings). If you can, please stop by. You can find out more here.
Skip forward two months, and I’ll be heading up north to Michigan for the Halfway to Halloween Expo! This is an annual event held around when we’re six months away from Halloween (hence the name), and from what I hear, it’s always popular. This coming year, it takes place on Saturday, May 10th, 2025 from 11 AM – 6 PM at the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds (now there’s a name!) in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I’ll be there selling books and doing Tarot readings, so I hope to see you there. You can find out more on their website.
And finally, StokerCon 2025 will be held in Stamford, Connecticut on June 12th – 15th. This is the Horror Writers Association’s very own convention, with lots of panels, pitch sessions, endless ways and reasons to socialize, and, of course, the Bram Stoker Awards Dinner and Ceremony. I don’t know if I’ll be selling anything there this year, but I’ll definitely be there to enjoy myself, see old friends and make new ones, and possibly get books into people’s hands. I know, I know. And just a few days ago, I was talking about how much I was looking forward to going. But today I got an email to call the airline, and when I called, they said they and their international partners were canceling all flights into Tel Aviv for the foreseeable future. This is the second airline to cancel on me. And while I could keep searching, it just feels like I’d just set myself up for more disappointment. So, I canceled.
Again, sucks. And I was really looking forward to going to my friend’s wedding and seeing the country for the first time in nearly fifteen years.
On the bright side, I’m planning on going as soon as things calm down. Don’t know when that’ll happen, but I’ll go. And not hell nor high water will keep me from going! Especially if, by then, I have a lot of vacation time and money saved up. I WILL visit my people’s homeland again someday!
Still, sucks.
On a brighter and more immediate note: a friend and colleague messaged me out of the blue yesterday about joining her and some friends at GalaxyCon Columbus. It’s a convention for fans of anime, gaming, comics, TV, and everything else you can think of, and it’s quite expensive to get a table at. My colleague and some of her friends went in together on a table. However, one of my colleague’s friends dropped out, meaning they needed an extra author at the table (apparently they’re all horror or speculative fiction writers).
And guess whom my colleague reached out to?

A convention, especially a popular one like GalaxyCon Columbus, might just be the thing I need. New readers, new sales, and possibly a run-in with some major celebrities? Yeah, I’m in. It’s that time again. I have to post about events I’m going to be doing in 2024! Or at least ones that haven’t happened yet. It would be weird if I posted about ones that have already happened.
So, first off, this coming weekend, on Saturday, September 28th, 2024, I will be attending the Hidden Marietta Paranormal Expo. It’s going to be at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Marietta, OH, so if you’re in the area, stop by. It’s a really amazing expo in a beautiful and historic town, and I’ll be selling books and doing Tarot readings while I’m there. If you can stop by, please do. I would be happy to see you. Next, I have two events in Columbus on October 26th, 2024. The first is Scary Saturday, which is being held in collaboration with the Columbus Metropolitan Library. Me and my fellow writers at HWA Ohio will be hosting events all day for folks of an adult age who would like to have fun with the library without kids in tow! We’ll be selling books, doing fun things like Horror Haiku Writing, readings, and lectures. I’ll be posting more about it as we get closer, but if you want to come, it’ll be at the Columbus Metropolitan Library in downtown Columbus.
Later in the day, the Thurber House, a local museum and creative arts hub named after local writer James Thurber, will be hosting fun Halloween themed events on the same day. That includes some adult-themed events in the evening, including some of our writers doing readings of their work. I’ll be hustling over from the library to the Thurber House for a reading myself. Okay, this isn’t the kind of barker I meant, but can you blame me for using it? The pup’s so cute!
As many of you know, my fellow HWA Ohio members and I had a booth at the Columbus Book Festival last weekend. A few days later, when I met online with my critique group, one of the authors who was at the festival with me mentioned that I was like “one of those guys at a fair. What do you call them? Oh yeah, a carnival barker!”
I did not disagree. After all, that’s what I was going for. Throughout the weekend, I was calling out to people who were passing our tent, trying to get them in and to check out our books. I must’ve introduced myself with “Welcome to the Ohio Horror Writers Association! My name is Rami Ungar, how are you today?” and called out “Come in, come in! We don’t bite…not unless asked” a thousand times. And you know what? That worked. People came in, they checked out our wares, and they bought stuff. By the end of the weekend, I’d managed to sell out.
I’m not trying to brag or anything. I’m just relating one of the hard lessons I’ve learned over the years of writing and doing events: people won’t just discover you and they won’t just gravitate towards you without good reason. My first few events, not wanting to make a fool of myself, I was mostly quiet and did not go out of my way to get people to buy my work. At most, I would wait for someone to get close or to make contact and just say, “Hi.”
The result? Not a lot of sales. Not a lot of new readers. I learned then that, unless you’re a big name like Stephen King (or if you’re at a paranormal convention, a well-known name in the community), you can’t just hope people will find you and show interest. You need to put yourself out there. You need to be a bit of a carnival barker.
This isn’t just my opinion. A lot of authors and a lot of articles have suggested that, at events, readers are more likely to get an author’s book if, unless they already know the author or their work, they are drawn to the author. In other words, if the author themselves makes a good first impression. If that happens, the reader is more likely to check out the author’s work, either by buying at the event or getting it online later.
I guess it’s a good thing I’m already a talker and I like to be the center of attention.

Now, if you’re not the type who likes to put themselves out there like that, I have some good news. You don’t have to do this at events. Some events are better for networking than for selling books, so if you would prefer to interact with other authors and just talk to the occasional reader that comes your way, please do. And hell, you don’t even have to do events! If you prefer not to go out there, don’t. Stick to podcasts, or blogging, or YouTube, or just writing. Every writer is different, and every writer’s goals are different. If yours don’t involve putting yourself out there to sell books, don’t feel pressured to do so.
However, if you do go to the events with the intention of selling books, and if you put money down on the table to do so, I would put in a bit of work to ensure you get your investment back, plus returns. After all, that’s what worked for me.

The first event on the horizon is actually this coming Saturday! HWA Ohio will be an official partner at the Ohioana Book Festival this Saturday, April 20th, 2024 at 10:30 AM – 5 PM at the Downtown Library in Columbus, Ohio. In addition to having several of our members there as featured authors, HWA Ohio will have a booth where we’ll be telling people about our chapter and what we provide for writers and readers. I’ll be volunteering at the HWA Ohio booth for most of the day, so please stop by if you can. Click here for details on the festival.
After that, guess what? I’m going to jail! ParaPsyCon will be occurring on May 17-19, 2024 at the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio. I’ll be selling books and doing Tarot readers both days, so please stop by and check it out if you’re in the area. Entry fee is the same price as a self-guided tour of a prison (ten bucks, if I remember correctly), and it’s an amazing place, so why not stop by, see the prison and check out one of the biggest paranormal conventions in the Midwest? June I’ll have the month off, but then July gets busy. First, HWA Ohio will be having a booth again at the Columbus Book Festival.The festival will be taking place on July 13-14, 2024 at the Downtown Library and at Topiary Park in downtown Columbus, Ohio (don’t worry, one’s right in front of the other, so it’s not a long walk). We’ll be having a larger booth this year and likely more authors and books, so definitely come out and check it out. Further details can be found on the festival’s website.
And after that, I’ll have another big festival on the way! Motor City Nightmares will be occurring at the Novi Sheraton in Novi, Michigan on July 26-28. This is a huge horror convention, and has had horror luminaries like Bruce Campbell (Ash in the Evil Dead movies) and Kane Hodder (played Jason Voorhees four times) as special guests! And the lineup for this year is also looking pretty awesome, so I’m very excited to join this convention. Further details can be found on their website and Facebook page.
Unfortunately, I will not be attending the Indie Author Book Expo in Terre Haute, Indiana in August. Something came up, and I won’t be able to travel out that week. Sucks, but sometimes that’s just life. Apologies for any fans of mine in Indiana who were looking forward to seeing me.
And finally, HWA Ohio will be hosting a Super Saturday event on October 26, 2024 at the Downtown Library in Columbus, Ohio. Super Saturdays are events the library holds once a month to bring in more adult audiences for the library’s events. What exactly we’ll be doing is still not finalized, but we have a date and the library is excited to collaborate with us. More details will be available as we get closer.

Well, we have another announcement post. I got plenty of upcoming events and I want to see if I can get as many people as possible to go to those events. So, as I typically do, I’m making an announcement post. Let’s get into it, shall we?
So, next month, I have two conventions during back-to-back weekends. The first will be Cleveland Concoction in Cleveland, OH. It’ll be at the Bertram Inn Hotel and Conference Center from Friday, March 8 through March 10. I will be hanging out in the Authors Alley, selling books, doing Tarot readings, and possibly speaking on panels (to be confirmed at a later date). The following weekend, on March 16, I’ll be at ShamROCK, a Pagan Celtic Celebration hosted by the Magical Druid, one of Columbus’s favorite metaphysical shops. It’s being held at the Courtyard by Marriott West Columbus. I’ll be selling books and doing Tarot readings. And then later, I’ll probably take part in pagan rituals, drinking and dancing. I promise I probably won’t do anything I’ll regret in the morning. Anyway, if you’re interested in joining us, please check out the website.
Next, I’ll be at the Wagnalls Local Author Fair at the Wagnalls Memorial Library in Lithopolis, Ohio. It’ll be April 6 from 10 AM – 2 PM, and I’ll be selling more books and doing more Tarot readings (I’m surprised they’re letting me do the latter but I’m not complaining). I have also volunteered my services for a presentation or panel, so more on that in the future.
One month later, I’m returning for my fourth ParaPsyCon on May 17-19 at the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio. This year, Hearsemania will be joining us, so there will likely be all sorts of wild and wonderful altered hearses to check out. During the summer, it looks like I’ll be taking a break till August 10, when I’ll be joining the Indie Author Book Expo in Terre Haute, Indiana at the Terre Haute Convention Center. This is the same group I did an event with in Iowa back in 2020 (and then afterwards I went to the Villisca Axe Murder House).
