Doll, clown, and evil all in one; can it get any creepier?

You heard it here folks, the first draft of my story of an evil doll is done. This was one of my more difficult stories to write, and I really struggled at certain points to keep putting down the words on the paper. However, last night I managed to finish it, and my sigh of relief and satisfaction was a loud one.

I’ll take another look at it in a couple of months; I know there’s a lot to improve upon, and I want to come at it anew when I do. Until then, I’ll see what sort of other stories I can come up and work on. I’m in one of those periods where I’m really productive with my short stories, so I plan to keep going for as long as possible.

I turned on my computer, logged onto the Internet, and what did I see? “BREAKING NEWS: Shooting at Sikh Temple!” The first thing that goes through my mind is “Oh my God!” The second thing that goes through my mind is, “It’s like Aurora all over again.”

And you know what? It is like Aurora! Sure, the shooter is dead, so we may never know what motivated this attack, and it’s too early to know what sort of weapon the shoorter was using. But how many more shootings are going to occur before the elections before we get some stricter gun laws?!! I’ll be shocked if Congress doesn’t act on this! And if it doesn’t, then maybe they will after another shooting occurs! Because you know what Congress not taking action tells people who may be tempted to do their own shootings? It says nothing will prevent them from getting guns the legal way, so fire away!

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m all for the Second Amendment. If someone wants to go hunting or protect themselves in their homes, that’s their choice and it’s protected by the constitution. But when anyone can walk into a gun shop and buy an assault weapon used by military forces, then you know something’s not right!

So Congress, do us all a favor, make some stricter gun laws before we suffer any more deaths!

Hey, how’s everybody doing? Remember I told you that a science-fiction story I wrote was getting published back in July, but the editor of the magazine wasn’t specific on when it would be published? Well, just got an email from the editor: he was waiting for a nice collection of short stories to come to him before he began the publishing process, but now that he’s reached his quota, my story Ripple should be hitting the net in November at some point.

Now, I know some of you are thinking, Isn’t that a little late in the year? Well if you ask me–and since you’re reading my blog, I’m assuming you already asked–if you ask me I’m just happy it’s getting published at all, so better late in the year than never. And until then, we know another short story I wrote, Aasif, is getting published next month, so that’s something to look forward to, right? Something to tide us over until we can read about aliens visiting Earth.

So until next time, have a great weekend, and try and stay cool!

Happy Birthday to the blog,

Happy Birthday to the bog,

Happy Birthday to the blog,

Happy Birthday to the blog.

Yes indeed, ladies and gentlebloggers, it was exactly one year ago that Rami Ungar the Writer hit the Internet. And what a year it’s been: including this post, I’ve written 108 posts, racked up 3,049 views (an average of 8.4 a day), at least 150 likes (I lost count after 100), 50 followers that I know of (there’s more than one way to follow a WordPress blog besides signing up through WordPress, and I have no idea how many people do that), and 122 comments. I survived my first year of college, found out two short stories I’d written are going to be published, and was even honored by Anne Rice at one point. But most of all, I’ve found some loyal readers and some great friends, whom I can always count on for an interesting and fun comment conversation.

I’d like to thank WordPress for being an awesome blogging website, and I’d like to thank everyone who’s been with me up till this point. I hope you stay with me while I continue blogging and working on achieving my dream of becoming a horror novelist.

Now before you go out and decide what gift to buy for me, please read the rest of this post:

1. I would appreciate it more if you donated money to an organization supporting LGBT rights, helping victims of assault and/or abuse, supporting Israel, or that gives funding to underfunded school. However if any of you want to help me pay for college, I would not mind at all.

2. I am giving you guys a gift or two instead today. Below are two videos off of YouTube. The first is from Disney’s 1951 film Alice in Wonderland, with a hearty rendition of “A Merry Un-Birthday”. I chose this because I wanted a video that doesn’t have the regular birthday song, and because I couldn’t find any birthday songs that sounded scary. Besides, even if I don’t care for this particular adaptation, I just love Alice in Wonderland!

The next video is from the people of HISHEdotcom, who are always to take the latest Hollywood blockbuster and tell you How It Should Have Ended. This is one of their latest videos, detailing all the problems of Prometheus and how they think it should have been done. You should really check out their other videos if you like this one, they’ve done stuff to just about every type of movie imaginable.

Hope you enjoy these videos. Have a lovely day. See ya!

Why Dolls Freak Me Out

Does anyone else feel this photo might give them nightmares? It’s perfect for this post.

Last post, I mentioned that I was working on a short story involving a doll, and as I’m into the whole scaring people silly thing, I thought I’d talk about why dolls might freak people out, specifically dummies and those old bisque and porcelain dolls. Frankly, those are the kinds I have trouble with; anything from traditional dolls of certain cultures to the Barbies and Bratz of today I’m fine with (I had enough of the latter in my house thanks to my younger sisters). It’s just dummies and bisque dolls creep me out, and I’m pretty sure I’m not alone in that.

I think it might have something to do with the eyes: most dolls that have eyes, their eyes are painted on or they’re made from plastic. Because those eyes are flat, 2D, and not very life-like at all, you become less afraid of those types of dolls. But the eyes of dummies and bisque dolls are made from glass or plastic made to resemble glass. This gives them such a life-like appearance, you can’t help but think the dolls are alive, watching you, taking in every single little thing you do. It’s unnerving to think that not only a toy is watching you, but taking in information that it can use against you. I bet that if those big-eyed dolls could change their expressions, they’d have  sly little grins on their faces, the type of grins that say, I know so muc about you and I’m going to hold it forever in me until I can use it to make you do what I want you to do. Creepy! The only time I’ve ever found it anything other than creepy was in the manga/anime Rozen Maiden, but then again manga and anime have that effect, don’t they?

Anyone else have any thoughts on this? If so, let me know.

Oh, guess what? Today I made the milestone of 3000 views on my blog! Awesome!

I’m taking a break from  Snake while I wait for an expert I’ve made an acquaintance with to get back to me on a couple of details. I’m also still searching for an agent for my other novel Reborn City, so I have a bit of time on my hands. So, what does a writer do when he has one novel he’s trying to find an agent for, he’s taking a break from the other novel, and a bit of free time on his hands that he wants to fill with some good writing?

Well in my case, I blog and work on short stories. The fact that you’re reading this is proof that I’m doing the former. As for the latter, there are a few projects I want to devote myself to in the next few days. One of those projects is a short story I wrote back in June. As I believe you should let a piece of fiction sit for a little while before editing it as a way to look at it with fresh eyes, I think it’s time to take a look and see what needs to be cut, changed and added in. You might remember this short story; it’s the one where I had trouble with this concept I wanted to work with but after meditating I had a few new ideas that made it easier to write the story with that concept. I’ll get to work on that after I finish this post.

The other project, I really have to thank my friend and fellow blogger Jason Alan, whose website you can check out here (http://jasonalanwriter.wordpress.com/). Anyway, a while back he posted a photo of a doll he found on the ground while roaming through France and it inspired me to write a story involving an evil/cursed doll. Now, I know what you’re thinking: there are so many knock-offs of Child’s Play out there, so can you really make an original story involving an evil doll?

I’m hoping; I added in a few things while coming up with the story that I think will make this story original enough that it won’t annoy or disappoint any readers of horror who are hard to please (speaking of which, am I the only guy who liked Dead Silence? It had the ghosts, the theme music, the living dolls…yet it got such bad reviews and I’m not sure why). I’ll probably get to work on this doll idea after the editing, and hopefully tonight.

Oh, and in case any of you want to know what this picture Jason took that’s so captivated my imagination is like but don’t want to go on his site (can’t understand why you wouldn’t), here’s the photo:

Creepy, huh? Are you surprised it’s stirring the warped imagination I have?

Have a nice day; I’m off to edit and write.

The poster for Nolan’s final Dark Knight film, which is not to be missed.

Holy awesome blockbuster, Batman!

Okay, all Robin jokes aside, this movie kicked butt! At times it seemed a little slow, but it was definitely killer! There were plot twists that I had no idea coming (seriously, you will freak at certain points), the emotion was believable, and the storyline was superb (there were things I wouldn’t have done, but I’m still an amateur by comparison. And besides, how many movies make you rethink how you’ll write your novel, which I’m considering doing?).

The one thing I did not care for was the girl two rows below me and one to the right who kept turning her phone on and lighting up the theater near the end of the film. Girl, it’s a movie theater. Your boyfriend can wait, and if you want to check the time, buy a watch.

I rate this movie a 4.5 out of 5 for a job well done.

Oh, fun fact: you know that chant they do in the film that the guy from the trailer translates as “Rise”? Well, I did a little digging, it’s actually Moroccan Arabic and it means “he rises”. Close enough translation, but still makes more sense in context.

I’ve a little over two hours before I go to see The Dark Knight Rises and I’m super-excited! I have no idea what’s going to happen in the movie, except Batman, Catwoman, and Bane go head to head, and it’s going to be awesome! Thank God I didn’t go online and read any spoilers!

Sadly, I will be thinking of the Aurora shooting when I go. A generation from now, viewers of The Dark Knight trilogy, as the Nolan films are collectively called, might not even be aware that such a horrible event occurred, but for those of us in the here and now, it weighs heavily on our minds. I’ll probably say a quick little prayer for the victims and survivors before I go into the theater (I’m just spiritual that way).

So before I go, I just want to tell you two things:

1. I’ll have a review of the film as soon as I get home and have dinner, and

2. I’m close to 77 Microsoft Word pages of Snake. Know what that will probably mean? A Lucky 7 excerpt!

See you after the film.

Yeah, the Snake can be pretty vicious. Just like the basilisk, except without the whole eye thing. Still, very scary, isn’t it.

Ladies and gentlebloggers, I finally wrote a section of my novel-in-progress Snake with the Snake in it that I can post online without giving away too much of the character away. It only took sixteen chapters, but I finally wrote it. And I got to say, it came pretty easy to me; I didn’t have any writer’s block while working on it.

For a little context, here’s what’s going on right now: the Snake has followed his next target, loan shark Thomas Luiso, to the home of Luiso’s mistress. The Snake sneaks in and catches them in the middle of some fun (if you get my meaning). Luiso’s mistress faints from the shock, while Snake fights Luiso, who hasn’t realized he is dealing with the man who brutally murdered two other members of Luiso’s group.

Hope you like what you read, but just warning you, things are going to get violent. Also, I want to clarify something I said in the last post dedicated to the Snake: I said Part II was the longest part in Snake. Actually it’s Part III. Sorry about that.

______________________________________________________________________________________

The Snake strode over to Luiso, who was just getting off the bed. Luiso looked at him and cursed in Italian. “You son of a bitch.” he growled. The Snake ignored him, reaching for Luiso’s neck.

Just then Luiso spun, kicking the Snake in the knee. The Snake stumbled backward, hitting his head against the wall. Luiso ran at him, swinging his fist. The Snake dodged, moving his head to the right to avoid Luiso’s fist, which went into the wall with a sickening crunch. Luiso pulled on his hand, but it looked stuck in the wall.

The Snake smiled from beneath his mask and grabbed Luiso’s meaty left nipple, giving it a hard twist. Luiso screamed in pain, grabbing the Snake’s arm weakly with the hand not stuck in the wall.

Letting go of the nipple, the Snake pulled back his fists and punched Luiso in the gut and face. Luiso groaned with each impact, looking more and more on the verge of fainting every time the Snake hit him. The Snake kept up the barrage, his excitement building. How much longer can you go? he thought. How much more can you struggle before I make you go through more pain?

Suddenly Luiso swung a fist at the side of the Snake’s head, hitting him right in the ear; the Snake fell over, holding his ear as if it were about to fall off. With a loud crunch, Luiso freed his other hand from the wall and turned to the Snake. “You are so morto, freak.” said Luiso. “Teach you to mess with me!”

The Snake saw Luiso take a step towards him and thought of an idea; as Luiso took another step forward, the Snake jumped and tackled Luiso’s large belly, sending the large man backwards and over. Luiso fell onto the ground with a loud thump, shaking the room as he hit the carpet. The Snake crawled onto Luiso’s chest, straightened himself up, and began punching Luiso’s face. Blood went flying as the Snake broke Luiso’s nose and knocked out a few teeth.

It was a while before the Snake realized that Luiso was knocked out. Standing up off the man’s expansive belly, the Snake looked at Luiso and wondered if he should steal a car and take him somewhere where they wouldn’t be disturbed or—

Then the Snake noticed there was a bathroom in the bedroom, one with a large bathtub and several fluffy white towels. An idea came to the Snake’s head, something he’d always wanted to try, and here was the perfect opportunity for it.

The Snake grabbed his gun from the vanity table and, hooking his arms underneath Luiso’s armpits, dragged Luiso into the bathroom.

___________________________________________________________________________________

What happens in the bathroom that the Snake has been wanting to try? I’m not saying, except it will make you squirm. Hope you like what you read. If I can, I’ll post more excerpts. Until then, thanks for reading and have a nice day.

This past week the world was witness to two horrible tragedies: the first was in Bulgaria, where a busload of Israeli tourists were killed by what appears to be a suicide bomber while on a bus. Then a few days later, a man in Aurora, Colorado went into a viewing of The Dark Knight Rises and proceeded to shoot up the audience. These tragedies touched me profoundly for a number of reasons, and this morning when I went to synagogue to pray this morning, I made sure to say a Mourner’s Kaddish for the victims of these horrible tragedies.

Already though, we are hearing, on TV and the Internet, on the radio and in the newspapers, on the street and in our homes, what these tragedies may signify and what should be done. I would like to say a few things about these discussions:

The first is to the suicide bomber in Bulgaria, who is believed to be linked to terrorist organization Hezbollah. Hezbollah claims they are following the will of Allah by attempting to wipe Israel and its citizens off the map. If you ask me, the members of Hezbollah are not Muslims in any sense of the religion; I’ve met, discussed, and formed friendships with quite a few Muslims, both secular and religious, and they have been nothing but kind, courteous, and when Israel is brought up, willing to talk compromise in the hopes of a true peace. These people who claim they are killing in Allah’s name are flouting the commandment to preserve life, a basic tenet not just in Islam but in many religions worldwide.

The point is, if you’re killing in the name of your god, no matter what religion you are from, you are not acting as a member of that religion. You are acting as a murderer. And so before we go blaming any religion for the actions of an individual claiming to be acting in that religion’s name, let us remember this person does not represent an entire faith; they only represent themselves (and their radical organization, if they belong to one).

On the flip side, we cannot blame a lack of religion for a crime just as we cannot blame a religion for a crime: today a congressman from Oklahoma went on TV and said that “the attack on Judeo-Christian principles” was the reason the Aurora tragedy happened, even though Jason Holmes, the suspected gunman, has not given  a motive as far as law enforcement is aware. If you ask me, a lack of religion or the absence of religion at school or a workplace or a lack of emphasis of religious values in national policy does not necessarily mean someone will become a murderer. No, what it means that people can make choices based on religious values or on their own values or the values of others. What those choices are though, are that person’s and that person’s alone, and we cannot say that whether or not they had religious values in their lives was the reason behind their murders just as we can’t say that a religion is the reason certain people commit murder. It just doesn’t make any sense at all, at least not to me.

And one more thing: I heard someone blaming the attack in Aurora on violent movies and considering stricter regulations on these movies. Not too long after, the commissioner of the NYPD came out saying that the Aurora shooter may have been acting under the impression that he was the Joker. This will most likely reignite the debate about whether media content should be regulated or banned based on factors like violence or sex. As a writer of stories that more often than not have violent elements, I have to say that’d be counterproductive: if someone commits a crime and it bears a similarity to a movie or a video game and that person may be connected to the movie or video game, I tend to think that person was already mentally unbalanced and that they just incorporated that movie or game into their mental instability somehow. And you can’t point the finger at one single movie, game, book, show, or song and say they caused a crime: a person’s mental make-up is the product of a number of biological, environmental, cultural, and sociological factors over a period of time, so pinpointing the one thing that causes mental instability can be tricky, if not impossible. And besides, plenty of people who are certified crazy blame their actions on the Bible, God, the Devil, or a million different religious-related things. We don’t consider banning the religion, do we? No! That’d be ridiculous.

I don’t deny that media can affect our perceptions of reality and society, I just don’t think that blaming it for a person’s actions is the wisest decision, let alone banning or further regulating it.

So what do I say caused these tragedies? Individuals who couldn’t understand the beauty of life and whose reasoning is probably as horrible as the tragedies they committed. That is my opinion, and I also belive there are ways you can stop these sorts of things from every happening again:

The first is to make sure that children understand how important life is. Children tend to see abstract concepts as concrete, and I think teaching children how wonderful life is and how we should cherish it can cause those who may see killing bugs is fun or violence is cool to reconsider their positions, and keep these lessons throughout their lives.

At the same time, I don’t think you should expose children to violent games or movies, at least not until a certain age, and certainly not until they’ve learned that what they see on the screen is not real and that what goes on in the game or film doesn’t always reflect reality. In fact, it usually doesn’t.

And finally, I think where adults and grown teenagers are concerned, access to guns and other deadly weapons should be more strictly regulated, as when people have easy access to guns, things such as Columbine, Virginia Tech, or Aroura are made that much easier to pull off. Not only that, but it may be a good idea to institute psych exams for children and teens who are repeat breakers of the law, as many psychopaths commit crimes at young ages and that’s the perfect time to get them off the streets.

You may feel free to disagree with me, I’m fine with that. I just thought I’d voice my opinion on the subject since others certainly will. And I’d like to say one more thing: to the victims of these tragedies that could have been avoided, you were taken too soon, and we will never forget you. To the families and friends of the victims, my heart and my condolences go out to you, and I wish you all healing and compassion in this time of grief. To the people who celebrate the murderers for their deeds, I find you detestable and pity you. And to those tasked with fighting and stopping these monsters from committing these crimes, I pray for wisdom and good luck to be given you in your mission to preserve the peace in our world.

That is all.
