Surprise, I have a new publication! And it’s a short essay.

So, if you’re unaware, the Horror Writers Association does a series of articles called Halloween Haunts every year. The articles are written by and contributed by members and can range in subjects from Halloween to horror writing to life in the HWA. It’s a great way for Halloween people to talk about their favorite holiday during the month of October.

And I’ve always wanted to contribute, but everything I thought to write about always seemed less than worthy for an article. So, I never tried. However, earlier in the month, Kevin Wetmore, a well-known figure in the HWA who is running Halloween Haunts this year, contacted me out of the blue and asked me to contribute! And yeah, that was cool, but I also didn’t think I was the right choice to submit an article. And I did let him know my worries regarding subject matter.

Still, he encouraged me, and I decided to at least try and think of something. And, to my surprise, a few hours after he messaged me, I had a great idea for an article.

That article is now published on the HWA website, and is linked through the button below. “A Little Yard to Work In” goes into the evolution of the Halloween displays I put up in my front yard. And while I wish I had put in some photos for the essay (a Halloween yard display is a visual thing, after all), I’m very proud of it. How could I not be? I get to share my love of creative yard displays for Halloween, after all.

Anyway, I would like to thank Kevin Wetmore for inviting me to contribute to Halloween Haunts this year. (Only the second time I’ve ever been invited to contribute to something, and the first time I’ve actually gotten in!) And I would like to thank you for (I’m assuming you are) reading the article. As always, I appreciate your support as I work hard to become a full time writer.

Until next time (which, who knows? Could be later this week or early next week), my Followers of Fear, good night, pleasant nightmares, and 17 days till Halloween! I’ll see you real soon.

In fact, I might be in your yard right now. Among your Halloween displays. Look outside, if you dare.

We’re in October. My favorite time of the year. In fact, I would argue it’s the real most wonderful time of the year, not Christmas (see my blog post about that here). And, now that we’re in October, my HOA lets me put up Halloween decorations in my yard!

So, without further ado, here is the my yard display for spooky season 2026.

Not bad, right? And if you can’t tell, the theme this year is “spiders.” That’s what’s covering all the characters. Well, except Lizzie Borden. But I include her because she’s kind of my favorite acquitted-murderess-turned-ghost. Not having her there would feel wrong.

Anyway, here are some close ups of my skeletons covered in spiders.

Yeah, I have a feeling that one spider by the porch is going to scare some delivery people. But what can I say? A little adrenaline rush is good for everyone.

And, of course, I made a silly little video about the yard, just like I did last year. Take a look.

Silly, right? But for some reason, it’s got over eleven hundred views on YouTube at the time of this writing. No idea why, but I’m glad people are enjoying it.

And, of course, I took a night shot of the yard. And it was spooky!

Ooh, I think I made myself shiver! And I’m glad it turned out so well. Honestly, one of the best parts of being a homeowner these past four years is being able to have a yard display. To customize it and even tell a story, even just a silly little one, in my yard. And the best part is, my neighbors love it, too! They may not read horror, let alone read anything by me, but several of them love to come by, check out what I’ve put up, and even take some photos.

And occasionally I scare their pants off, too. I had a ghost that hung on a pole and floated in the wind one year, and it scared people to pieces.

Which is kind of the whole point of this display, isn’t it?

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed seeing my yard display this year. I’m going to enjoy having it up through the month. And I am looking forward to putting out my Jack-o-lantern on the 30th. In fact, I think I’ve just had an idea for what I will carve this year…

One more thing before I end the post, my Followers of Fear: today my horror writer friends and I had the event at Bite This by Annie, aka Columbus’s Goth bakery. And it was a blast! We enjoyed each other’s company, we enjoyed the sweets, and we got to sell some books. In fact, one person sold out of one book entirely (good for her)!

And this coming Saturday, me and my horror writer friends will be gathering at Sweets of Grace in Canal Winchester for more sweet treats and spooky reads! If you can stop by, it’s this Saturday, October 10th, 2026 from 11 AM – 6 PM at 60 E. Waterloo Street, Suite A, Canal Winchester, Ohio, 43110. However, you need to RSVP to go, so please do so on the website HERE.

And if you can’t stop by but would still like to support me (or you just need a spooky book to read), then why not check out my catalog of books? From plant/human hybrids and strange gods to Mafia-hunting serial killers and carnivorous horses, I got something for every reader, including some free stuff. You can check them out using the button below.

And if you like what you read, please leave a review online so I know. Positive or negative, I love reader feedback, and it helps me out in the long run.

That’s all for now, my Followers of Fear. I’m taking the rest of today to relax. Until next time, good night, pleasant nightmares, and 27 days till Halloween!

It’s the first weekend of October, so you know what that means! It’s time to set up my Halloween yard display!

Since 2022, when I moved into my condo, I’ve enjoyed putting up a new yard display every October for spooky season. This year, I decided to do something a little different: instead of just putting out a bunch of random stuff, this year I put up something with a theme.

Ladies, gentleman, and non-binary/genderfluid people of class, I present to you “Hanging Out in the Graveyard!”

Neat, huh? And every character is special. We have Lizzie Borden (are you surprised that she’s in this?).

We have the kids (these skeletons were a gift for me from a friend. I’ve been waiting since March to dress them up and put them up in the yard).

We have an undead American Revolution soldier.

And we have the Ghoul of the Graveyard. Both are old Halloween costumes on a pair of skeletons. One final hurrah before they become unusable.

No surprise, I had fun planning this one and setting it up. I even filmed a silly little video of the yard. You can watch it here.

Anyway, that’s this year’s Halloween display. Here’s hoping it survives and none of the skeletons or tombstones fall over too frequently. One way or another, I know it’s going to be a hit with my neighbors.

That’s all for now, my Followers of Fear. Good night, pleasant nightmares, and 26 days till Halloween. Ask your doctor if being bitten by a zombie, werewolf, or vampire is right for you.

You know I love Halloween. Hell, on my social media, I have been counting down every day since around August. So, it shouldn’t surprise you that, when October comes, I love having a yard display like the ones my neighbors would put up when I was growing up. Especially now that I have a condo with a small patch of dirt that I can use for a yard display.

Today, after breakfast, I got my Halloween display props out of the attic, and began setting up. The results are below.

Pretty cool, huh? The ghost with the face like the Scream villain is the only new piece I bought this year. Everything else is stuff I’ve collected over the years. Whenever I got them, I think they all look amazing when they’re out on my lawn like this.

And if you read the title of this post, you know I also have a Halloween costume. Last year, I went as Cthulhu using a kigurumi. The year before, I went as the King in Yellow. This year, what am I going as?

I am going as…Sweeney Todd.

Pretty cool, huh? I wore this costume for Purim (sort of like Halloween for Jews, but in the spring) and I got kind of attached for it. So I’ll be wearing this costume, minus the nametag and the wristband on my wrist, for Halloween. And the makeup, which I love in this image. I mean, holy shit, this makes me look my eyes entirely white!

Oh, but when the local ballet company does its production of Dracula later in the month, I’ll be going as a vampire with a cape. You have to dress appropriately for these things, after all.

Anyway, I just wanted to share this with you all. I hope you’re having a good October so far and that you’re looking forward to plenty of spooky tricks and treats. Until next time, my Followers of Fear, good night, pleasant nightmares, and only 26 days till Halloween!

Did I need to write a post about this? No. Am I going to anyway? Oh, hell yeah.

So, as you know, I LOOOOOOOVE Halloween. In fact, I pretty much celebrate it year round and try to get people to freak out with me between late August and November 1st. So, I take great delight and great preparation in my Halloween costume and my front yard (especially now that I have a front yard).

So, without further ado, let me show you my very special Halloween costume. Behold, I am…Cthulhu!

Pretty cool, huh? I’m wearing a kigurumi, which is a Japanese costume you can wear as streatwear, as a costume, or as onesie pajamas. I got them as a birthday present, and have worn them for a couple of YouTube videos. And now that it’s October and it’s gotten colder, I’m wearing this as both pajamas and as a costume. Isn’t it awesome?

I may also wear other stuff, and I’ll be sure to take photos, but this will be my main costume. Besides, it’s so comfy!

And here’s my yard this year. I bought a whole bunch of stuff, so now my yard’s even more creepy! Check it out!

What’s your favorite part? I’m quite proud of the big spider web. I found one that’s not dangerous to wildlife (because, as you may have heard, the stuff that we’ve stretching across our bushes for years can kill birds and small animals) and which I can still hang scary spiders on. One’s even got a baby head! Isn’t that freaky!

And next year, I’ll go even bigger and creepier! Maybe even a giant statue that moves when motion is triggered in front of it!

Whether I dress up as a cosmic horror entity again is another matter (remember last year, when I was the King in Yellow?). Though I’m not sure how I would dress up as Nyarlathotep, Azathoth, or Shub-niggurath without getting an expensive and elaborate costume that’s hard to move around in. I mean, can you imagine what those costumes would like? Without going mad, that is?

Well, that’s all for now, my Followers of Fear. I don’t have work tomorrow, so I’m going to pop popcorn and watch a scary movie. Until next time, my Followers of Fear, good night and pleasant nightmares.

Speaking of Halloween, as you’re probably aware, Hannah and Other Stories is out now and is scaring everyone silly! If you would like to check out these stories full of ghosts, budding serial killers, and carnivorous horses, you can do so using any of the links below. And if you do, please leave me a review after you read the book. Positive or negative, I love reader feedback, and it helps readers decide whether or not to check out the book.

Once more, until next time, good night and pleasant nightmares, my Followers of Fear.

What are some of the first things you think of when it comes to Stephen King’s IT? Is it Georgie being dragged down the drain by Pennywise the clown? The fortune cookies filled with eyeballs and mutated bugs? The final battle with Pennywise in his lair? That one scene that dare not be spoken?

I’m sure all these and more occur to you, because they’re significant plot points and they carry a whole lot of scares.* What you might not think about are the quieter moments in the story: the building of the dam in the Barrens, or Ben, Beverly and Richie going to see a movie together, or Bill going for a ride on his old bike Silver after not having seen it for over a quarter of a century. They’re the quieter moments of the story, the moments that allow you to get to know the characters better and see them about their daily lives. And they’re just as important as the scarier parts of the story.

I’ve been thinking of these moments more and more lately, because I just wrote an entire chapter for Crawler, my mummy novel-in-progress, that was a quiet moment. In it, two of the characters, one of whom is in mourning over a sudden loss, bond with each other over the course of a lazy afternoon. Nothing scary happens, no mentions of the horrors driving the plot take place, and there’s no ground laying or foreshadowing for future scares. It’s just a sweet, quiet scene where two characters form a relationship.

Honestly, I’m not used to writing those sorts of scenes. In shorter works, every word has to be necessary so the story can fit within a word count. There’s no room for quiet scenes showing the creation or deepening of bonds, getting to know a character better, or seeing them grow. You need that room to create a short story that packs a punch, especially for horror stories. And with my novels, every chapter and scene was necessary to the plot in some way, furthering the story, foreshadowing future plot points, or scaring the shit out of the reader in some way. Writing a scene over the course of two or three days that was just exploring the budding relationship between two characters, was new for me. And I feel like I learned a lot while doing it.

Which is good, because other writers, not just King, include those quieter moments throughout the books. Ever wonder why Harry Potter includes Quidditch matches in the books? Because they’re fun, normal things a wizard would learn in school and serve as breaks from the intrigue of whatever was happening any year at Hogwarts.

Now, having these scenes aren’t always necessary for every story. But it can be a good idea to include them if you need an organic way to flesh out your characters, deepen their relationships, or show them growing. Especially you can’t think of any way to insert such moments into the more essential scenes, like Georgie getting dragged into the sewers or whatever.

In any case, I’ll probably write a few more of these scenes in Crawler, as it’s a very character-focused story, so I’ll get plenty of opportunities to practice. Perhaps afterwards, I’ll be able to write a post about writing quiet scenes and writing them well. And maybe when I do, I’ll write it with a quiet satisfaction.

*Except that one scene, I know, but we’re not going to talk about it, are we?

One more thing, my Followers of Fear: this Wednesday at 4-6 PM EST, I’ll be joining fellow horror writers Heather Miller and Daemon Manx on the podcast “What’s Write For Me” with Dellani Oakes. We’ll be recording live, so you’re encouraged to join us live by following this link, and we’ll be discussing and even reading from our scariest works, so I hope you’ll join us. See you there!

That’s all for now, my Followers of Fear. It’ll be a busy week leading up to Halloween, but I hope it’ll be a fun and memorable one. Until next time, good night, pleasant nightmares, and eight days till Halloween! Have you carved a Jack-o-Lantern yet? I have, and for the first one in my own home, I don’t think it turned out half-bad. What say you?
