Cracked Skull Press is Shutting Down

Many of you know that some of my fellow Ohio horror writers and I published an anthology of Ohio horror stories last year. The book, That Which Cannot Be Undone, was published through Cracked Skull Press, a small press three of my friends and I created specifically for this project. We got the book out last October, and everybody really liked it.

Of course, after you publish your first book, whether you’re an author or a small press, everyone wants to know what you’re going to do next. And after a lot of discussion, my friends and I, not without some reluctance, decided to shutter Cracked Skull Press.

Like I said, we do this somewhat reluctantly, and it wasn’t an easy decision to make. But running a press is a lot of work. It’s basically a full-time job in and of itself, and we all already have full-time jobs in addition to writing on the side. You have to deal with distribution and quality control, taxes, responding to customers, etc. And the amount of work needed to do a second project, even if we really wanted to do one, was just too much for us to try again.

So, we’re shutting down Cracked Skull Press, with our final day being December 15th. Just one month from now. And on that day, That Which Cannot Be Undone will go out of print. Perhaps forever.

Honestly, I’m a little bummed about this. I would have liked to see this company continue onward. But I couldn’t run it alone, and we all have other stuff in our lives that require our attention. Hell, look at how many stories I’m working on as well as all the other stuff in my life, and you’ll see what I mean.

Still, I’m not coming away from this with just extra copies of TWCBU. My friends and I learned a lot from this experience of running a press and creating an anthology, and we had some fun times along the way. And hopefully we’ll be able to collaborate on other projects in the future, or at least meet up every now and again as writers and as friends.

Anyway, I wanted to get this out before too much time passed. The news is already out on Cracked Skull Press’s social media, so I’m putting it out on mine. If any of you would like to get a copy of TWCBU, I’ll post a link below. It’ll only be available till December 15th, so grab your copy now while you still have a chance. It’s a great anthology, filled with stories by Ohio horror authors (including myself), all set in Ohio and revolving around the theme that which cannot be undone. You’ll love it, and it might make a great gift for the holidays as well.

“Car Chasers” is Now Available for Free

Good morning, my Followers of Fear. As promised, I’m making one of my short stories available for free. And the first story I publish is “Car Chasers,” which came out in 2019 in The Binge-Watching Cure II from Claren Books.

If you’re unfamiliar with this story, it focuses on street races that take place in the woods around a small town. During these races, ghosts chase the cars around. And you do not want to be around if these spooks manage to get close to your car. Think of it like the Fast and Furious movies deciding to go in the direction of a ghost story.*

Anyway, now it’s available for you to read, and with a kickass cover to boot. Later on, I’ll make it available on my Book Links and Excerpts page, in case anyone wants to read it there. And if you do end up reading it, I hope you’ll let me know what you think. I had a fun time writing this story and I still think of it very fondly (to the point that I direct movie adaptations in my head).

I know the next one’s supposed to be the last, but you’ll forgive me if I have my suspicions.

I’ll Be Releasing Free Short Stories to My Website Soon

Hey, Followers of Fear. So, there’s something I’ve been meaning to do for a while now, but I’ve really only been able to think about it recently. And that’s that I’ll be releasing some of my stories for free here on this blog/website.

Why am I doing this? Well, some of my fellow authors have short works available for free through their websites, and it brings in a lot of new readers. Seeing as I’m always on the lookout for new readers, as well as new ways to bring them in, I thought I would get in on it too. I don’t know if it’ll be effective, but I think with enough fanfare and mentions at the many events I do, some people are bound to check it out.

Who knows? They might become ardent Followers of Fear and gobble up all my work. I would be happy if that happened.

As to which short stories I’ll be releasing, I will be releasing three over the next several months that have already been previously published. There are a few reasons I chose to release previously published stories, rather than any new stuff. One is because I know they’ve already passed the test of being good enough to publish, so it makes sense to use them. I also want to expose them to new readers, and finally I think they make the best representatives of what you can expect from my work if you should decide to pursue more of my stories.

And, if the previously published stuff does well, it will make more sense for me to publish new stuff here as well.

So which stories will be coming out? First will be “Car Chasers,” which is like a spooky Fast & Furious movie. It will be followed by “Cressida,” a mermaid horror story that I’m particularly proud of. And finally, I’ll be releasing “Natural Predators,” a pandemic horror story taking place at a summer camp.

As I said, depending on how they do, I may release more on this website.

And when will the first story be released? Why, this Friday! That’s right, “Car Chasers” will be coming out on Friday through this website. It has a whole new cover and is ready to go. I cannot wait for you to read it and let me know what you think.

So, keep your eye on this website and on your inbox, because we got an epic ghost story coming in a few days. It’ll be spookily good fun.

My First New Story in a While

I actually wanted to write this post days ago, but you know how life gets. It gets crazy, and my life has been especially crazy lately. Still, it was nice that last week, on Wednesday, I started a new short story. And on Thursday, I finished that story. It’s been my first new work in…God, I don’t know how long.

So yeah, it’s safe to say The Great Editing has ended. However, because of that crazy life I mentioned above, I wasn’t able to start writing for several days after my last editing project. When I did, when I started working on that story, it was such a release! Like something that had been building up inside of my brain and in my fingers was released in the course of eleven-hundred words. And the next night, I wrote the rest of the story in one glorious sitting. Again, there was that sense of relief and release. Like, after so many months of editing and promotion, telling a new story that had been rattling around in my head for months was exactly what the doctor ordered.

So, how is the new story? Well, as the writer, it’s hard to tell. “White Leaves” involves the strange events occurring in an apartment complex on a chilly Halloween morning (hey, that’s coming up!). It’s also told in the second person, which is something I’ve only done once before. (If you’ve read The Quiet Game, you probably remember the story.) The reason why I did is because I read a horror story recently that was told in the second person, and it was awesome. When I formulated “White Leaves,” the idea of telling the story in the same method as that other story just seemed to make sense.

And, somehow, it’s under three thousand words, which is a surprise for me. Normally my short stories are at least seven-thousand words. I even said on my social media, “Who am I and what have I done with my normal writing style?”

Anyway, it’s weird and fun and I think my critique group is going to get a kick out of it. Perhaps, with their feedback and a bit of a polish, I’ll even be able to find a home for it that will enjoy the strange tale and what I’ve included. That would be nice.

As for my next story, I already have the idea and I’ve done the research necessary. It’ll be a Jewish horror story, so hopefully it becomes a great addition to that growing catalog. I’ll keep you guys updated on it, especially if the story gets published.

Review: “Midnight Masquerade” by Greg Chapman

You might recognize Greg Chapman’s name, as he was responsible for the amazing cover for That Which Cannot Be Undone. But in addition to creating horror art and horror covers, he also writes as well. And Midnight Masquerade is his latest book, a collection of short stories with many of them taking place on or around Halloween. I received an eARC from him and gave it a read back during the summer. And with it coming out on Halloween proper, I thought I would release a review now, at the beginning of October.

So, what did I think?

Well, like most anthologies and collections, there were stories I enjoyed and others I didn’t. Of the ones I enjoyed, they were really good. The novella at the beginning of the collection, “The Last Night of October,” is a tragic tale of a man dealing with both grief and fear of mortality, wrapped up in what might be a revenge story. The stories “Octoberville” and “Vaudeville” were also good, though I thought the latter’s ending wrapped up a bit too nicely and left one or two questions.

However, a few of the stories felt like they entered a bit too abruptly, such as “Left on October Lane” and the titular story, “Midnight Masquerade.” Honestly, I would have liked to see the concept in the latter explored in a longer story, but it ended just too quickly. And the story “Happy Daze” felt like it was partly inspired by 2019’s Joker but didn’t go far enough with the concept of a party clown on a bad day. If any of these stories or a few others were maybe fleshed out a bit more, I might have enjoyed them more.

As the collection stands, Midnight Masquerade by Greg Chapman is decent reading for spooky season. On a scale of 1 to 5, I’ll give it a 3. It comes out on Halloween day, so if you enter November still craving that Halloween horror buzz, this collection might fill the need. Head to your favorite retailer to preorder a copy.

Hannah and Other Stories: One Week Since Release!!!

Heya Followers of Fear. Can you believe it’s been a week since Hannah and Other Stories was released? I’m having trouble with it, simply because I had such a wild week, so it feels longer than seven days. Still, that doesn’t change the fact that seven days have passed since Hannah came out.

Now, if you’re new here, Hannah and Other Stories is my new book, a collection of seven short stories. Among those stories are tales of ghosts, budding serial killers, and carnivorous horses, among other things. It took over two years of work to get it ready for publication, and was finally released last week on the 23rd.

Since it released, I’ve heard from quite a few Followers of Fear that they’ve either bought the book and have started reading it, or they’re planning on getting it soon. Not only that, but I even got a really nice review! Joshua Gage, a reviewer for Cemetery Dance magazine’s website, posted this review on their site. Here’s a quote from the review that I really liked:

Hannah and Other Stories is a really solid collection of horror stories that span the gamut from cozy and comforting to gory and disturbing…After you have read this book, you will wonder why you didn’t own it already, and will most likely want to read everything Ungar has written.

Wow! Now that’s a compliment. And I would love it if more people read all my work.

Mr. Gage also put out this nice tweet to help with spreading the word:

Those flesh-eating horses are quite popular. I wonder if they’ll become the best-known part of the collection?

Anyway, at the time I’m writing it, Mr. Gage’s reviews are the only review, but I’m sure more will come in time. And when they do, I’ll be sure to let you know.

Trust me, I will. You can’t get me to shut up about this book.

“Hannah and Other Stories:” Only Ten Days Away!!!

Yeah, this September is going to be the month where I post about very little but Hannah. But you knew that going in, didn’t you?

Now, if you’re unaware, Hannah and Other Stories is my latest collection of short stories, containing tales of ghosts, budding serial killers, and carnivorous horses, among other things. You know, all the things that are perfect for the Halloween season. And the book releases on September 23rd, 2023. Which is…ten days away! EEEK!

Sorry, I had to go scream in terror and excitement while also performing a voodoo ritual to ensure the book’s success. Now, where were we? Oh yeah. So, as I’ve been saying, Hannah‘s release is just over a week away. And I am beyond excited for you to read it. I’ve been recording videos, going on podcasts (going to be on one tonight, actually), and obviously posting about it here nonstop. All in the name of getting people interested in reading this book, which my publisher and I have been working to get it ready for nearly two years now.

And I think you’re going to really like the stories inside. Each one is special to me and I think will resonate with readers of the horror genre (as well as possibly scare the shit out of readers who don’t read horror). Hannah is a fun ghost story told through the point of view of an experienced ghost hunter (and no, not one of those fakes); Queen Alice is a surprising thriller that crosses Alice in Wonderland with Slender Man; The Autopsy Kid and Doctor Sarah is a dark, gruesome tale about a teen getting wrapped up in the machinations of a budding serial killer; Fuseli’s Horses is about carnivorous horses, and they are as terrifying as they are cool; The Red Bursts is the most abstract story, but it also talks a great deal about finding faith in tragic circumstances; What Errour Awoke takes cosmic horror to talk about the horrific events the world has suffered through the past few years; and Poor, Unfortunate Souls is about finding someone who understands in the depths of the Paris catacombs.

Awesome, right? I think so, too.

Anyway, I can’t wait to share this book with you and will do everything in my power so you’ll want to read it when it releases. If you’re interested, you can preorder it from any of the sites below. “The Wild Hunt” is Getting Published in Happy Hellidays!

The mythological Wild Hunt, and the inspiration for this forthcoming tale.

Followers of Fear, there’s so much going on in my writing career beyond just Hannah and the Face of Horror contest that I can’t share with you yet, but which I want to so badly. Thankfully, I can now share one thing with you: one of my short stories is getting published!

Back in March, I wrote a Christmas horror story called “The Hunting Party,” which I hoped to start submitting around the time holiday anthologies started seeking submissions. Well, I edited the story and renamed it “The Wild Hunt,” and then submitted it to Hellbound Books for consideration in their upcoming anthology Happy Hellidays.

As you can tell from the title of this post, it’s now going to be published in said anthology. And I cannot wait for you to read it!

Taking place at Christmas Eve, “The Wild Hunt” follows two sisters who have a fateful encounter with the Wild Hunt, a mythical band of riders who travel the sky at night. According to some, this band gets quite powerful around Christmas.

You know, Followers of Fear, I really didn’t think I’d be able to get this story a home. Or at least, not so easily. I mean, I thought it was great, but it’s long for a short story at 7,300 words and I worried that the ending might be a bit too sweet and happy, even for horror. Even a rewrite of the ending didn’t calm my worries.

But on the first try, “The Wild Hunt” was accepted. And to be in an anthology from Hellbound Books, no less! It’s an honor.

Not to mention, I’m kind of tickled that, as a Jew, I get to add a Christmas horror story to the world. Feels kind of like a variation on a theme, seeing as my people wrote some of your favorite Christmas carols last century. Yeah, that’s true. Look it up. You’ll never look at carols the same way again.

Anyway, I look forward to letting you know when Happy Hellidays, and thus “The Wild Hunt,” is released. It’s a great story, and I hope it fills you with Christmas fear–I mean, cheer. And I can’t wait to tell you all the other good news out there I’m celebrating. With any luck, I may be able to reveal it all in the coming weeks and days.

Run for your lives! Light a magic candle! Pray to the Great Old Ones to be left alone! Hannah and Other Stories releases in just one month!

As you’re probably aware, Hannah and Other Stories is my new collection of short stories which is releasing on September 23rd, 2023. This collection contains seven original tales, featuring tales of ghosts, budding serial killers, and carnivorous horses, among other things. My publisher, BSC Publishing Group, and I have been working on this book for two years, so we’re very excited for people to read it. Hell, I’m kind of hoping it becomes one of the most talked about books for the Halloween season this year.

At the very least, I want to get the book in paperback. Right now, it’s only available in ebook, but if it does well, it’ll get a paperback. Maybe even an audio book.

With that in mind, we’re also doing everything we can to get people interested in the book and in maybe preordering a copy. On my end, I’ve been posting YouTube videos where I read sections from the book. A couple of the videos I’ve done are below.

Not bad, right? I tried to create an atmosphere to go with the stories, and I plan to do the stories I haven’t covered before it releases.

And BSC has been doing some amazing excerpts as well, only they’ve been posting these beautiful graphics that they do in-house! I absolutely love them. Here’s some of the most recent.

Anyway, I’m super excited for people to read it. These stories are all beloved to me in each their own way. What Errour Awoke is a story that not only allowed me to tap into my love of cosmic horror, but helped me to deal with world events that were causing me anxiety at the time of writing. Hannah and Queen Alice were both fun to write, with the former being inspired by a ghost story that’s always fascinated me, and the latter being an interesting mashup of Alice in Wonderland with Slender Man. The Autopsy Kid and Doctor Sarah was a story where I experimented with extreme horror and splatterpunk that I hadn’t done before, while Poor, Unfortunate Souls made for a heartfelt story of acceptance and hardship in the midst of the Paris catacombs. The Red Bursts gave me an unexpected story of finding faith in dark situations, and Fuseli’s Horses allowed me to have fun with a new monster while also playing with some teenage drama.

I can’t wait to see what people think when they read them.

“Hannah and Other Stories:” Two Months Till Release!!!

Did you know that we’re only a hundred days away from Halloween? It’s true. And I can’t think of any way to celebrate the opening of spooky season than preordering what will surely be one of the best horror releases of 2023.

Okay, terrible opening aside, it is both 100 days away from Halloween and two months till the release of Hannah and Other Stories. For those of you who don’t know (I’m sure there are a few of you out there), Hannah and Other Stories is my new collection of short stories. It’s being released on September 23rd by BSC Publishing Group and features tales of ghosts, budding serial killers, and carnivorous horses, among other things.

And I am so excited for people to read these stories. The seven stories are all plenty fun and strange and unique, which is what I love. The title story, “Hannah,” is about a pair of ghost hunters who get more than they bargain for when they investigate a haunted school. The one that follows it, “Queen Alice,” combines Alice in Wonderland with Slenderman, which I’m sure would intrigue many of you. The story “What Errour Awoke” combines classic English literature, cosmic horror and some of the biggest events of the past few years into an epic tale of magic and horror. “Fuseli’s Horses” contains those carnivorous horses I mentioned, and come on! Don’t you want to know how that works?

Plus, half of the stories contain LGBT characters and “What Errour Awoke” deals with a lot of the conspiracy bullshit we’ve been dealing with these past few years, so I’m sure someone’s going to try to get it banned from a library or school at some point. I’m sure more people will want to read it just for that.

But back on track. I’m so excited for people to read these stories, and I’m doing all I can to get people interested in preordering copies. It hasn’t been easy (see my recent post on marketing), but I feel I’m making headway. For example, I’ve posted some videos on my YouTube channel, and they’ve gotten some attention. Below are some of the ones I think really help with the sell.

If you watched all those videos, or even just one, thank you. That helps immensely.

I’m also releasing tons of excerpts, some of which are below. And I’m appearing on podcasts soon. Plus, with the eARC almost ready, that will mean I can do a lot that will surely heighten Hannah‘s profile, not the least of which will be the eARC readers, some of whom are very well known in horror, may help spread the good word about it.

Hopefully by September 23rd, there will be plenty of buzz for Hannah.
